Pair Of Renaissance Limestone Statue Height 86 Cm

Beautiful pair of limestone statues from the 16th century in pendants. Good size: 86 cm high, they very probably represent knowledge and access to discoveries through travel, as their attributes may suggest: book, sea anchor. They therefore do not seem to be of a religious nature. Very readable despite the gaps. The sculpture is nervous and subtle: large braids and large curls for the hair, clothes with beautiful drapes, belts and cords encircling the waist, knee semi-engaged. A slight smile adorns their faces, the eyes are treated in almonds. They obviously come from a larger set, since treated in the round on a limestone slab, itself showing traces of sawing. They have been outside for a long time, so they are a bit eroded and are adorned with moss and lychen. Nevertheless very interesting and decorative.
