Sleeping Putti Holding A Silenus Mask, Carved In Alabaster. Europe 19th Century.
The sculpture is in alabaster. The putti is lying on a bed, his head resting on a cushion; he holds a Silenus mask in his hand. It sleeps peacefully, resting on its folded wings. There's certainly a lot of symbolism in this little sculpture, and the presence of the mask is not insignificant. The statuette is worn and one foot is broken. Probably Italian, difficult to date. 19th century or earlier. 14 x 6.5 x 6cm.
