Hard Porcelain Dish. Blue And White Decoration. China Or Japan 16°-17° Century.
Artist: Arita Jingdezhen
Turned porcelain dish. Cobalt blue underglaze decoration typical of the Chinese "Caraque" style. This style of compartmentalized decoration with a central motif was innovated probably around 1550 in China and lasted for almost a century. Around 1630, Japanese potters copied this style, which was in great demand in Europe. It is often difficult to determine whether porcelain in this style is Chinese or Japanese. In this case, the finesse of the body suggests that it was produced in China in the second half of the 16th century, but the 2 elegant serpentine motifs on the reverse are more Japanese in style. Late 16th century Chinese or early 17th century Japanese work. Good condition, the only accident is a crack that we have circled on a photo. Four centuries do not pass quietly for porcelain.
