17th Italian Baroque School "rest On The Flight Into Egypt"
"Rest on the Flight into Egypt," Italian Baroque school, second half of the 17th century.
The painting depicts Mary, Joseph, and the Infant Jesus resting at the foot of a tree during their flight from Egypt. Joseph remains in the background of the scene, leaning against a rock, watching over Mary as she offers the Child a red apple; this gesture symbolizes redemption from original sin, with the apple representing the new fruit of salvation that reverses the guilt of Adam and Eve. In the background, a mountain landscape with a waterfall can be glimpsed.
The theme of the Flight into Egypt has been explored by numerous artists; among them, Caravaggio’s and Rubens’ versions remain outstanding examples. The style of our painting is typically Baroque, with a strong emphasis on light and color contrast; even the Child’s rounded features are reminiscent of those of Baroque cherubs.
The painting comes from a private Tuscan collection and is in excellent condition; it was restored by the family of origin at a restoration workshop in Pistoia, as indicated by the label affixed to the stretcher, involving re-stretching and replacement of the stretcher, but upon close inspection, no obvious retouching is visible. The frame is a Salvator Rosa piece in gilded wood, contemporary with the painting.
