Almost certainly originating from a fountain, as evidenced by the presence of holes for water to flow through, this figure—with the features of a man with flowing hair—is reminiscent of the Triton at the feet of Neptune, Bernini’s famous sculpture. The position of the head and arms suggests that it was meant to support something held to the lips, likely a shell from which water flowed.
Its incomplete state makes it a fascinating object, sparking the imagination of the viewer.
