Late 18th Grand Tour Souvenir Marble Inkwell
Video available here: https://youtu.be/UzIkntkYvVQ
White marble inkwell shaped like a capital, a souvenir from the Grand Tour, Roman workshop, late 18th century.
The inkwell comes from a private Roman collection and is described as depicting one of the friezes on the colonnades of the Temple of Venus Genetrix, in the Forum of Caesar in Rome.
Rome was considered the highlight of the Grand Tour, as it offered both privileged access to the historical heritage of previous centuries and to the wonders of the Baroque era.
The works of artists, particularly the views of Rome and the archaeological sites, helped shape and spread the imagery of the Grand Tour, creating a “myth” of European antiquities and of Italy as a cultural destination. During their travels, young people could purchase, according to their means, numerous works of art and antiques and visit the ruins of Rome, as well as those of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which had recently been rediscovered. This gave rise to the trend of creating “souvenirs”—replicas of masterpieces from museums and archaeological sites, reimagined as everyday objects such as caskets, inkwells, etc.
