Considered one of the masterpieces of Canova's artistic maturity, the sculpture, sculpted between 1793 and 1796, portrays Mary Magdalene in a moment of profound introspection and repentance. Slumped on her knees on a boulder, her torso is bent, her head bowed to the left, her eyes streaming with tears. A cloth tied with a rope loosely covers her body, leaving her hips and back partially exposed, over which her long hair falls. The sculptor wanted to highlight the contrast between the allure of a still attractive body, an expression of life and sensuality, and her annihilation in the awareness of sin and the invocation of divine forgiveness.
Our sculpture, carved from a single block of pure white marble, is well-proportioned and beautifully crafted. Copies of this subject are few.
The fingers are missing, but the rest is intact.
