Basin, After François Briot

Basin modeled after François Briot – 19th century – Repoussé copper – Ø 45 cm

An elegant circular basin in repoussé and chiseled copper, modeled after the famous “La Tempérance” design created by François Briot in the late 16th century, the original of which is housed in the Louvre Museum. This model, one of the most iconic of the French Renaissance, was widely reproduced in the 19th century due to the quality and richness of its decoration.

The central medallion depicts the allegory of Temperance, surrounded by cartouches representing the four elements and a rich decoration of foliage, mascarons, fantastical animals, and allegories inspired by the Renaissance. The border is adorned with relief cartouches separated by finely executed grotesques.

The piece features a beautiful original patina, highlighting the finesse of the repoussé work. The rim is encircled by a brass frame.

Condition: generally good, with normal signs of wear. Please note:

• one mounting screw is missing on the reverse;
• slight warping along part of the rim, visible up close but unobtrusive when the object is displayed;
• some signs of wear and oxidation consistent with its age.
