S. Smith: Solid Silver Vermeil Ewer, Cellini Model, London 1879
Spectacular large Victorian-era Renaissance ewer in the style known as "CELLINI". This exceptional piece features very rich decoration, including mascarons (on the spout, handle attachment, body, and base), female busts, animals such as goats and deer, leafy branches, and fruit... The interior of the ewer is in vermeil (gold on silver). The scroll-shaped handle is topped by a female bust and features two insulators. Hallmarks (on the body and inside the lid) indicating English fineness (.925), hallmarks for LONDON 1879, and hallmarks of the master silversmiths S SMITH & Son, active from 1865 to 1884, and the piece is numbered on the base (see photo).
