A Dowry Chest Dated 1704, From Trentino-alto Adige, Made Of Walnut And Briar, With A Key

An elegant and rare dowry chest, likely intended for wedding use, made in 1704, as indicated by the inlay on the lid.The piece can be traced to the area between Trento and Bolzano, a region where, between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a refined style of furniture production developed, influenced by both Italian and Tyrolean traditions.The structure is made of Swiss stone pine, a wood widely used in the Alpine regions, and is entirely veneered in walnut, with panels of walnut burl embellishing the fronts and the lid. The molded frames and the refined geometric composition attest to the high quality of the craftsmanship. The date 1704, created using marquetry, stands out on the lid, a detail that lends the piece further historical significance.Of particular note is the original hardware: the internal lock is a three-turn type, made entirely of wrought iron and finely engraved. Also present are the antique key and the sturdy wrought-iron side handles.Its compact size suggests it was a small chest intended for storing documents, valuables, or personal belongings.
