Polychrome Majolica Pharmacy Jar With A Spout, Central Italy, 17th Century

An elegant, spindle-shaped apothecary jar in polychrome majolica from central Italy, dating to the 17th century.

The vessel features the classic spindle shape, characterized by a narrowing in the middle that made it easier to grip and use in old apothecaries. The front features a refined rocaille cartouche painted in shades of yellow and blue, inside which is depicted a delicate landscape with a bird perched on a branch, surmounted by a star—an ornamental element in the 17th-century style. At the base is the ancient pharmaceutical inscription “EL'-DYAPHINIC?”, now only partially legible due to wear over time.

The piece is decorated with high-quality white glaze, embellished with fine azure fillets and a simple yet elegant design typical of 17th-century majolica production in central Italy intended for apothecaries.
