Large Dogon Horseman Statue, Cubist Style
Large Dogon statue depicting a horseman, highly stylized and cubist in style, 80 cm tall, or 84 cm including the base.
Significant patina from ceremonial use, late 19th or very early 20th century; there is some damage to the tip of a foot and the horse’s tail. The horse is depicted in a slenderized form to emphasize the figure’s grandeur—likely an important dignitary—who gazes toward the sky.
The glare visible in the photos is due to the powerful lighting used to ensure you can see the objects as clearly as possible.
From a very fine collection assembled by expatriates who lived in Africa in the 1950s and 1960s and later passed down through inheritance. It’s not always the case, but these cultured individuals took the time to carefully select their pieces on-site; they are all superb, and I have several for sale.
