Artist: Adrien Etienne Gaudez
Large bronze by Adrien Etienne GAUDEZ (1845-1902), height 77 cm, very good condition, superb patina, weight 23 kg.
Entitled the Belluaire, which is a gladiator confronting a wild beast, this handsome, muscular man masters and dominates the animal by holding it by the scruff of the neck, with a small smile almost of domination and amusement towards the wild beast.
Born in Lyon in 1845, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1862. Among other awards, he received a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889, which explains the word "hors concours" on the medallion. He could no longer receive any prize other than an honorary one.
He died in 1902 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
He is best known for his large bronzes of public monuments, such as the Monument à Parmentier and the Monument à Jean-Rodolphe Perronet in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He was highly regarded for his decorative statues in bourgeois circles of the time, and was renowned for his patinas, which are two-tone and superb on this sculpture.
