French Samson Bleu Céleste Porcelain Vase Pair With Putti Decoration, C.1860–1870
This elegant pair of French porcelain vases was produced by Edmé Samson & Cie, Paris, during the Napoleon III period. Inspired by the finest eighteenth-century Sèvres designs, they combine a luminous Bleu Céleste ground with refined Rococo gilding and beautifully executed hand painting.
Each vase features shaped reserves decorated with charming scenes of winged putti among clouds after François Boucher. The harmonious balance between the brilliant blue ground, delicate polychrome decoration and rich gilding gives the pair a timeless decorative appeal. Both vases retain the characteristic underglaze cobalt-blue Sèvres-style interlaced L's pseudomark incorporating Samson's distinctive letter S. Founded in Paris in 1845, Edmé Samson & Cie became internationally recognised for producing museum-quality interpretations of Europe's finest porcelains.
Preserved as an original matching pair and in excellent condition, these vases remain refined examples of nineteenth-century French decorative porcelain, equally suited to collectors and elegant interiors.
