Jean Miotte (1926–2016) was a French abstract painter associated with the “Art Informel” movement.Miotte began his artistic career in the decade following World War II, at a time when abstraction was emerging on both sides of the Atlantic. In search of an “alternative art,” artists such as Kazuo Shiraga, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Emil Schumacher and Jean Miotte emphasized artistic freedom as expressed through gestural brushstrokes and large blocks of color.
He describes his painting as “a projection, a succession of intense moments where creation occurs amid spiritual tension and as a result of internal conflicts.” He is influenced by choreography, jazz, and particularly ballet.
Critics say he is unique among the “Informels” because he continues to evolve, fighting against repetition and constantly questioning his forms of expression. In 2002, the Jean Miotte Foundation opened its doors in New York, showcasing a permanent collection of his works.
