Carved Wooden Religious Panels—three Holy Apostles—19th Century
A set of three carved wooden panels in bas-relief depicting the Holy Apostles.
I identify them as Saint Paul, Saint John, and Saint Peter the Evangelist, though I have some reservations given the absence of the keys, an important symbol associated with him.
On these panels:
Saint Paul is depicted as bearded and holding a sword, his traditional attribute.
Saint John is depicted as a young, beardless man holding a chalice.
Saint Peter is depicted as bearded and holding a book.
The dark oak panels were carved no later than the first half of the 19th century, while the light oak frames date from the 20th century.
Some minor imperfections remain, such as traces of wood-boring insect damage (which have been treated), small cracks, and signs of wear over time.
