Jean Pointu – Polychrome Flambé Stoneware Vase – Puisaye – Art Nouveau

Artist: Jean Pointu

Of ovoid form, this vase has a rounded body and a rolled rim.

Its height of 25 cm gives it a suitable presence for display on a cabinet or console, or as part of a collection of 20th-century French ceramics.

The decoration was created through the superimposition of glazes, producing flowing effects across the entire surface. The warm grey-brown ground is enlivened by shades of celadon green, cream, salmon pink, coppery ochre and deep blue.

The colours blend in broad, irregular areas, creating an abstract composition that changes according to the viewing angle. This light, contemporary palette distinguishes the vase from Jean Pointu’s work more commonly dominated by darker tones. The pastel shades and blue and copper accents allow it to sit naturally within a contemporary interior while retaining the character of Puisaye flamed stoneware.

The underside bears Jean Pointu’s impressed “P fleuri” stamp, together with the “.U” signature. These marks and the style of the glazing support a date of circa 1910, probably between 1906 and 1915.

Originally from the Puy-de-Dôme, Jean Pointu first worked in the faience factories of the Nevers region before managing a pottery in Avon-Fontainebleau. In 1906, he settled in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, where he developed a range of artistic stoneware decorated with superimposed glazes. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1908 to 1913 and also at the Salon d’Automne. His son, Léon Pointu, later continued the family workshop.
