"Private Oratory Crucifix - Ivory Christ With Cites - Historical Detail Present"
Collector's crucifix, with a total height of 48 cm, is a private oratory Christ dating from the 19th century (1860-1880). It consists of a finely carved ivory corpus of Christ, with careful anatomical details and perizonium, fixed on a sober cross in blackened wood. The whole rests on a stepped base and presents at its base a symbolic ivory figure: A skull and crossed bones. This imagery of Golgotha (the place of the skull) emphasizes the meditation of Christ's sacrifice and mortality. The austere style of the black cross associated with this symbolism was favored in circles of personal and rigorous devotion, characteristic of spiritual currents such as Jansenism at this time. The object has a documented provenance: A sheet of paper handwritten with a pen, glued under the base, serves as a family register for the Rousselin line. This historical note records events such as births, baptisms and deaths spanning from 1848 to 1919, closely linking the crucifix to the history of this family. The ivory Christ measures 17 cm from hand to foot. This private oratory crucifix is accompanied by its CITES certificate guaranteeing its legality. The CITES becomes the identity document of the object and must follow it with each transfer. The crucifix is in good general condition.
