Sacristy Crucifix In Blackened Wood, Late 19th Century - Height 94cm

An important devotional crucifix, 94 cm high and 60 cm wide. The entire piece is made of wood with its original mottled black patina. The sculpted Christ measures 48 cm from head to toe and 52 cm overall. He has a face with closed eyes and a slightly open mouth, attached to the cross by three metal nails. The loincloth is carved asymmetrically, short over the thighs and held at the waist by a visible cord. The drapery has pronounced folds with a drop of fabric on the right side. Note a missing piece on Christ's right hip (left side in the photos): an added piece, probably a knot or a piece of fabric, is missing, leaving the original attachment points and the raw wood visible. The base of the upright is adorned with a small carved figure of Mary Magdalene in prayer. The entire structure rests on a double-stepped base, and the ends of the crossbeams and the top of the upright are finished with turned finials. The cross's structure is reinforced by a nailed vertical board that supports the body. The wood shows signs of wear and old wood-boring insect damage. French work from the late 19th century.
