Large White Marble Bust Of Juliette Récamier, Based On A Work By Joseph Chinard—signed Houdon

A large white marble bust depicting Juliette Récamier (1777–1849), a famous figure in Parisian society during the Directoire and the Empire.
The young woman is depicted in the classical style, her face slightly tilted and her eyes downcast.
Her meticulously styled hair consists of large curls pinned up and held in place by several ornate headbands.
The drapery reveals part of the bust before falling back over the chest and being held in place by her crossed hands.
This sculpture is based on the famous composition by Joseph Chinard (1756–1813) dedicated to Madame Récamier.
The model underwent various reinterpretations and adaptations during the 19th century and into the early 20th century.
The sculpture I am presenting here bears the apocryphal signature “Houdon” on the thickness of the terracotta, which has no connection to the creator of the original model.
This inscription is preserved and noted in order to describe the work precisely without creating any ambiguity regarding its attribution.
