Robert Cauvel, Lord Of Foncquevillers (raised By), 1634 – Monument To The Scourged Christ, Arras

Monument to the Scourged Christ, erected by Robert Cauvel, Lord of Foncquevillers, in memory of his father Gilles Cauvel and his mother Barbe de Bassecourt (in the Church of La Madeleine, in Arras) in 1634.

Within a tall Baroque-style marble structure, adorned with five cherubs, is depicted the scene of Christ bound to a column; this scene is surmounted by an oval shield quartered with the Cauvel coat of arms (checkered in azure and argent) and the Bassecourt coat of arms (azure with a band of gules); a six-line cartouche in Latin.

This monument was once located in the Church of the Madeleine in Arras; it was lost when the church was destroyed by the revolutionary barbarians. This document is most likely the design for the monument, prepared by the craftsman, presented to Robert Cauvel, and accepted by him. Gilles Cauvel, Lord of Fransus (1525, died in or before 1584), husband of Barbe de Bassecourt, Lady of Foncquevillers (born around 1532, still alive in 1612). Their son Robert Cauwel died in 1650.

This monument is cited by ... (Arras: History of Architecture and the Fine Arts in this City ..., p. 148), with the following references: “Archives; Aubremetz’s Epitaphier; Father Ignace; see the drawing.” The volumes by Father Ignace (Pierre-Ignace Le Carlier, 1686–1751) were destroyed in the fire at the Palais Saint-Vaast in 1915.
