Period inscriptions appear on the back of the painting: "Alexandre César d'Anterroches Born in Murat, diocese of Saint-Flour, near Anterroches. Doctor of the Faculty of Paris, Count of Brioude, Canon and Vicar General of Cambrai and Arras, Commander of the Royal Orders of Saint-Lazare and Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel, appointed by King Louis XV at the end of January 1763."
Alexandre César was born at Château d'Anterroches (Auvergne) in 1719. He was the son of Charles Louis d'Anterroches and Jeanne de Lastic (1684 † 1724).
Chanoine-comte de Brioude, he entered the Saint-Sulpice seminary. Ordained to the priesthood in 1747, he was chosen as vicar general by the archbishop of Cambrai, Charles de Saint-Albin.
He was also a member of the French Catholic Church.
In 1763, he was appointed bishop of Condom. In 1789, he was elected deputy of the clergy to the Estates-General for the seneschal of Albret in Nérac.
The Civil Constitution of the Clergy led to the suppression of his diocese of Condom, which became part of the Gers department. In 1791, he was one of thirty prelate deputies who signed a letter endorsing Pope Pius VI's brief condemning the new organization.
Forced into exile in 1792, he died in London in 1793.
Alexandre César d'Anterroches was the last bishop of Condom.
