Charles Lobin (1814-1864) — Preparatory Study For The Stained-glass Window Of Saint Roch — Wash Drawing On Cardboard
Artist: Charles Lobin (1814-1864)
Preparatory study for a stained-glass window depicting Saint Roch, executed in wash on cardboard by Charles Lobin. 51 cm in diameter. Born in Loches in 1814 and died in Tours in 1864, Charles Lobin was a master glassmaker active in Touraine, then throughout France and abroad. Many European churches preserve his works, remarkable for their direct inspiration from 12th and 13th-century stained glass. His son, Léopold Lobin, continued and developed the family business into a veritable workshop of religious art, within the context of the major restorations of buildings carried out notably under the impetus of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. This cartoon testifies to the preparatory work of stained-glass workshops in the 19th century: establishing the composition, modeling in wash, and iconographic research before the creation of the stained-glass window.
