The artist depicts himself painting, palette in hand, following the practice of working from a mirror. The composition is simple and centered on the figure, without extraneous elements. This work predates the "Parisiennes" period that would establish his reputation. It reflects the initial phase of his artistic development. Domergue's self-portraits are infrequent. This one is of particular interest as it documents the artist's early years and allows us to observe the formation of his pictorial language before the establishment of his sophisticated style.
