Jean Souverbie - Three Reclining Women - Oil On Canvas
117 × 80 cm (with frame).
Rare painting by Jean Souverbie, a major artist of 20th-century French modernism.
This work depicts three female figures arranged on three successive planes, in a structured, balanced composition characteristic of Souverbie's work.
Jean Souverbie was close to and a friend of Pablo Picasso, whose interest in the construction of the body and the simplification of forms he shared. His work, particularly sought-after for its nudes and large figurative compositions, is in the tradition of French modernism.
Professor at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, he trained many renowned artists, including Philippe de La Hogue-Rey, Philippe Lejeune, Jean Le Merdy, Michel Pandel, Yves de Saint-Front, Georges Visconti and Pierrette Bloch.
This painting, with its large format, emblematic subject and pictorial quality, is an important work in the artist's production.
