H. C. Yarrow (1840-1929) was an American physician, naturalist and surgeon who distinguished himself in many fields: a pioneer in ornithology and herpetology, he was the first curator of reptiles at the National Museum, took part in exploratory expeditions in the American West, and made significant contributions to science through his research into the treatment of rabies and antidotes for snake venom, as well as playing a key role in the constitution of the catalog of the National Library of Medicine.

Paul Renouard stayed in Washington around 1890, where he was able to meet American high society on this occasion, notably at the Cosmos Club, an establishment that still exists today.

Paul Renouard enjoyed great success during his lifetime, and many of his drawings are now held in international museum collections.
