André Planson (1898–1981) was a major French painter and illustrator of the 20th century. He was one of the leading figures of the Peintres de la Réalité poétique movement. He painted landscapes of the banks of the Marne, Provence, Italy, and the Spanish coast. His brushwork is free, featuring broad swaths of paint and supple lines that, in this work, bring to life the orange-ochre earth, the nuances of the vegetation, and the contours of the hills.
