French School Of The 19th Century - Les Dieux Coupant Les Ailes De Cupidon - Oil On Canvas
81 by 100cm.
Work on canvas (not lined), preserved on its original stretcher.
Large composition depicting the gods plucking Cupid's wings. In the center of the scene, the young god of love is struggling on the ground: his arms are held by several deities, while his legs are held by Vulcan. The goddess Minerva grasps one of his wings and, bending down, prepares to remove it.
To the right, we can make out Mercury breaking the bow, while another goddess throws the quiver into the distance.
In mythology, many gods seek revenge on Cupid, powerful and fearsome, capable of causing so much upheaval with his power. This mythological theme has been treated by several famous masters of painting, illustrating all the dramatic force and narrative richness of this subject.
