Alfred Stevens (1823-1906) was a Belgian painter and pupil of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. He rose rapidly, first with his genre scenes, the subject matter of which is mostly young elegant women. He later joined the Impressionist movement, from which he had initially stayed away.
Alfred Stevens became the most Parisian of Belgians, prompting him to utter these words when he enlisted in the National Guard during the siege of Paris: "I've been in Paris for twenty years, I married a Parisian, my children were born in Paris, my talent, if I have any, I owe largely to France."
He frequented the artistic society of the time in Paris, such as Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Charles Baudelaire...
He was to play a major role in spreading the Impressionist movement in Belgium
