Artist: Aimé Millet (1819-1891)
Signed and dated marble bust on the pedestal. Height: 37 cm. Pauline Viardot, née Garcia (1821-1910), French composer and singer. A close friend of Ivan Turgenev, she performed for many years in Saint Petersburg and became a champion of Russian culture in France. Her husband, Louis Viardot, translated Turgenev's works. She is depicted here in the role she played in Gluck's opera Orpheus. Aimé Millet (1819-1891) sculpted a bust of Pauline Viardot to adorn the Paris Opera; this bust has since disappeared. A terracotta version is on display in George Sand's house in Nohant. Provenance: Pauline Viardot's descendants to the present day.
