French School, 18th Century – Plan Of Versailles, 1768 – Ink And Watercolor
Zenithal view of Versailles showing the palace and its gardens, executed in 1768 in ink and watercolor on paper.
Dimensions: 36 × 29 cm (visible area); 52 × 43.5 cm framed (under glass).
A very rare original 18th-century plan, entirely hand-drawn in ink and watercolor. The remarkable level of detail and precision makes it a faithful record of the layout of the Versailles estate and its surroundings at that time.
Plans of this kind were produced by engineers, geographers, or draftsmen using topographical surveys carried out on site (measurements, triangulation, and observation), then carefully transferred and drawn to scale in the workshop.
Comparable plans are now preserved in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France and in museum collections.
