French School, 19th Century - Moses Defending Jethro's Daughters At The Well - Oil On Canvas
Oil on canvas depicting the biblical episode where Moses comes to the aid of Jethro's daughters at the well. 41.5 × 66.5 cm (stretched). The canvas has been relined in the past. The work refers to the story in the Book of Exodus (2:16-17). After growing up in Pharaoh's court in Egypt, Moses kills an Egyptian who was mistreating a Hebrew and is forced to flee to the land of Midian. Arriving at a well, he encounters Jethro's daughters and intervenes to protect them from shepherds who were driving them away, before helping them water their flock. The scene illustrates this episode of protection and justice, a prelude to Moses's welcome into Jethro's house.
