Alphonse Frédéric Muraton was a French painter born in 1824 and died in 1911, specializing in religious and historical scenes and monastic figures. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he exhibited regularly at the Salon during the second half of the 19th century. His work is particularly marked by Spanish inspiration, notably in the austere treatment of monks, religious figures and meditative scenes sometimes reminiscent of Zurbarán or Ribera. Muraton is fond of dark atmospheres, ascetic faces and compositions imbued with spirituality. His paintings, often in small format, reflect a typically historicist and religious taste typical of late 19th-century French painting.
