Artist: Creil & Montereau
Antique Creil & Montereau earthenware chamber pot. Beautiful model in shades of blue. Bindweed decoration, Perles pattern. Very good condition. The bourdaloue is a small chamber pot, often made of earthenware or porcelain, which appeared in the 17th century. Its name comes from the preacher Louis Bourdaloue: his sermons, known for being very long, are said to have prompted some ladies of the court to discreetly use this vessel during services. Designed to fit the shape of the female body, the bourdaloue allowed women to urinate sitting or standing, under wide dresses. It enjoyed great popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, both in church and while traveling. With improved hygiene and the advent of modern toilets, it disappeared in the 19th century.
