Painting - Oil On Canvas - Virgin After G. Reni - Italy - XIX Th C
Oil on canvas - The Virgin at prayer
After Guido Reni (Bologna 1575 - 1642)
Beautiful oil on canvas depicting The Virgin at Prayer, inspired by a composition by the Bolognese master Guido Reni, a major figure of the Italian Baroque school of the XVIIᵉ century.
The Virgin is depicted mid-body, hands clasped in a gesture of devotion, gaze raised to heaven in an attitude of profound spirituality. The face, imbued with gentleness and recollection, is delicately lit, contrasting with a dark background that accentuates the intensity of the expression.
The treatment of the complexions, the finesse of the modeling and the sobriety of the composition clearly evoke the aesthetics of Guido Reni, whose representations of the Virgin and sacred figures were widely disseminated and copied in the XVIIᵉ and XVIIIᵉ centuries.
This work, probably made after the Bolognese painter's famous model, testifies to the wide distribution of his iconography and the enduring infatuation with his style imbued with grace and harmony.
Condition:minor losses and marks of time consistent with the age of the work.
A fine devotional painting, decorative and charged with spirituality.
