Important Clock (70cm) - Mercury - Bronze/marble - France - 19th Century
An important Empire-style clock depicting Mercury, the messenger of the gods, finely crafted in gilt bronze. He is depicted wearing his winged helmet and holding his caduceus, in the elegant gesture of adjusting or removing his winged sandal, bringing dynamism and refinement to the composition.
The veined Siena marble base, in a beautiful nuanced ochre tone, is adorned with gilt bronze appliques depicting a lyre in the center, embellished with snakes, foliage, and other motifs. The whole rests on four finely crafted clawed feet.
White enameled dial with Roman numerals, encircled by a gilt bronze snake.
France, 19th century.
Very well-preserved. Perfect working order: strikes the hours and half-hour. Minor accident in the rear left corner
