Gilded bronze Empire-style pillar clock – 1819 – Robin, Clockmaker to the King & the Queen

A superb Empire-period pedestal clock, dated 1819, crafted from finely chiseled bronze gilded with mercury, featuring a monumental design of great elegance, characteristic of the neoclassical taste of the period.

The white enamel dial with Roman numerals bears the prestigious signature “Robin, Horloger du Roi & de Madame,” attesting to the quality of its movement and craftsmanship.

The architecturally styled case is richly adorned with friezes, palmettes, scrollwork, and plant motifs. The side panels feature remarkable Corinthian-inspired decoration, while the arched pediment is lavishly chiseled with foliage and neoclassical ornaments.

At the center, a large bronze plaque featuring high-relief decoration inspired by the world of Homer serves as the clock’s principal figurative element. It is framed by an elegant, finely chiseled border.

The entire piece rests on an imposing, architecturally styled, stepped base, embellished with decorative friezes.

A very interesting historical detail: the back of the clock bears the date 1819 as well as a serial number, corresponding to a commission from the Garde-Meuble national. These inscriptions are particularly significant for tracing the history of this piece, attesting to its institutional origin.
