Daum Nancy – “Autumn Landscape” Miniature Vase
A small miniature glass vase by Daum Nancy, decorated with an autumn landscape scene depicting a rural landscape bordered by trees with foliage in shades of brown, red, ochre, and yellow.
The composition, particularly delicate for this small format, features a frosted, translucent glass background enlivened by vitrified powders and polychrome highlights. The trees with slender branches stand out against an open landscape, while the foliage in warm hues fully evokes the autumn season.
This type of miniature belongs to the Art Nouveau production of Daum Frères in Nancy, dating from the early years of the 20th century. Seasonal landscapes were an important theme for Daum, which developed a distinct pictorial language on glass during this period. The manufactory combined multilayer glass, powdered inclusions, acid etching, and enameling to create landscapes with great depth and atmospheric effects.
The design closely matches the “Autumn Landscape” model, of which several Daum miniatures are documented from around 1905–1910. Examples measuring just 4 to 5 cm are notably documented, featuring etched and enameled autumn landscapes.
This miniature thus dates from the period of Daum Nancy’s greatest flourishing, when the company was expanding its research into light effects, vitrified powders, and designs inspired directly by nature.
