Legras Glass Night Light – Forest Landscape Design

Artist: Francois-theodore Legras

Legras Glass Lamp/Nightlight – Forest Landscape Design

An elegant artistic glass lamp from the Legras workshop, featuring a wooded landscape design in amber tones, accented with shades of orange and blue along the neck’s contours.

This remarkable piece captivates with its naturalistic design, evoking a forest undergrowth through which slender, dark branches are visible. The trees stand out against a luminous amber-yellow background, punctuated by small touches of orange reminiscent of the last leaves of autumn. The lower portion, with deeper shades of green and brown, suggests the vegetation and the forest floor.

The design is achieved through glasswork that combines an etched surface with decorative elements that highlight the branches and details of the landscape. The upper rim, with its irregular, undulating contours, features delicate bluish hues that subtly contrast with the warmth of the amber color.

Light passing through the glass reveals the full depth of the colors and lends the landscape an almost twilight-like atmosphere. The piece’s generous form, its undulating neck, and the enveloping composition of the design make it both a functional and artistic object, characteristic of the taste for natural landscapes that emerged in the decorative arts around 1900.

The Legras Manufactory: A Leading French House of Artistic Glass

Founded in Saint-Denis in 1864 by Auguste Legras, Legras & Cie was among the leading French glass manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. François-Théodore Legras (1839–1916), who took over management in the 1860s, contributed significantly to the company’s growth and reputation.

The company produced a particularly diverse range of items, from everyday objects and bottles to decorative glassware. Its artistic creations are notably distinguished by their enameled, engraved, and gilded decorations, depicting flowers, foliage, animals, and landscapes.

Within the Art Nouveau movement, Legras exploited the expressive possibilities of colored glass to create pieces in which the material and the decoration complement each other. Forest and lakeside landscapes occupy a prominent place in this world, reflecting a keen interest in nature and its chromatic variations.

A decorative piece with unique charm

With its forest motif, warm tones, and undulating neck with bluish highlights, this lamp exemplifies the craftsmanship of French artistic glassworks around 1900. It will naturally find its place in a collection of antique glassware, alongside works by Legras, Gallé, or Daum.
