Art Nouveau Bronze Lamp By Margueritte Syamour
Very beautiful Art Nouveau lamp in gilded bronze depicting a nude female figure in elegant dancing motion, supporting a blown, iridescent glass tulip in delicate mordant shades.
This refined work is attributed to Marguerite Syamour, pseudonym of Marguerite Gagneur (1857-1945), a committed French sculptor and singular figure of the Belle Époque.
An artist deeply influenced by republican and feminist ideas, Syamour developed a body of work celebrating freedom, emancipation and the modern representation of women. She was close to Parisian intellectual and artistic circles at the end of the XIXᵉ century and became one of the muses and models of the famous poster artist and decorator Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), the undisputed master of Art Nouveau. Mucha created several works inspired by his physiognomy and elegance, including the famous Primevère.
The composition of this lamp perfectly translates the Art nouveau aesthetic: supple lines, assumed sensuality, exaltation of femininity and harmonious fusion of sculpture and decorative arts. The female body literally seems to carry the light, a poetic symbol of emancipation and modernity.
The quality of the casting and the finesse of the modeling bear witness to high-quality workmanship, in the spirit of Parisian creations of the 1900s. The glass tulip, with its flowing, floral contours, diffuses a warm light that sublimates the bronze's golden patina.
A decorative piece of the highest quality.
An elegant and rare decorative piece, both a work of art and a luminous object, embodying with refinement the spirit of the Belle Époque and the feminine ideal of Art Nouveau.
