Jean Camille Cipra (1892–1952) – River Landscape

He settled in France, where he spent most of his career. He lived primarily in Bourges and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants as well as at the Salon d’Automne. His work focused primarily on landscapes, with a particular fondness for the banks of the Loire, Burgundy, Brittany, and Normandy. His paintings are now held in several public collections, notably at the Musée de la Loire in Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, and a major retrospective exhibition was dedicated to him in 2006.

The painting presented here is a beautiful illustration of his talent as a landscape painter. In a composition of great serenity, the artist captures a riverside landscape enlivened by a row of poplars whose foliage is adorned with delicate autumnal hues. The reflections on the water echo the diffused light of the sky, while the land, bathed in shades of caramel, ochre, and golden brown, lends the entire scene a warm and peaceful atmosphere.

The brushwork is free and generous, applied with a palette knife in places, giving depth to the texture while maintaining remarkable luminosity. This painting perfectly illustrates Cipra’s sensibility; he knew how to convey the poetry of French landscapes without artifice, prioritizing the harmony of colors and the emotion of light.
