French School, 18th Century – Portrait Of A Lady From Lorraine – Oil On Canvas
Artist: école Française Du Xviiiᵉ
A high-quality portrait of noble dimensions, measuring 91 × 78 cm, formerly relined and presented in its original giltwood and stucco frame. The composition is academic, with the figure turned three-quarters to the left and the hips three-quarters to the right, lending depth and movement to the portrait. The subject wears a notable number of pearls, belonging to the historical type of the famous Vologne pearls, a treasure of the Vosges Mountains prized by both the Duchesses of Lorraine and the Queens of France. These pearls were so highly valued that the Dukes of Lorraine regulated their harvesting, with three "pearl wardens" monitoring the Vologne River each summer. Unfortunately, they disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century, victims of their own success and the industrialization of the region. Behind the figure, a peak can be identified as the Grand Ballon, the highest point in the Vosges Mountains, reinforcing the regional connection of this portrait. This painting is very likely the portrait of a Lorraine aristocrat and constitutes a unique historical record of this lost treasure.
