French School, 19th Century – The Gods Clipping Cupid's Wings – Oil On Canvas

81 x 100 cm. Oil on canvas (not relined), preserved on its original stretcher. Large composition depicting the gods tearing off Cupid's wings. In the center of the scene, the young god of love struggles on the ground: his arms are held by several deities, while his legs are held by Vulcan. The goddess Minerva grasps one of his wings and, leaning over, prepares to remove it. To the right, Mercury is seen breaking the bow, while another goddess throws the quiver away. In mythology, many gods seek revenge on Cupid, powerful and formidable, capable of causing so much upheaval with his power. This mythological theme has been treated by several famous masters of painting, illustrating the full dramatic force and narrative richness of this subject.
