Portrait of Jean-Pierre Théodore, Baron de Wacquant-Geozelles, in the uniform of a field marshal in the Austrian army, adorned with a veritable iconostasis of decorations. Circa 1816-1820. Oil on canvas. 61 x 50 cm. A copy exists in the Spada collection (now on display at the Musée de la Légion d'honneur, Paris). Jean-Pierre Théodore de Wacquant-Geozelles was born in Lorraine on May 17, 1754. He distinguished himself on numerous occasions within the Austrian army, becoming one of its most brilliant generals. His actions at the Battle of Aspern, when he entered the occupied city of twelve thousand French soldiers, earned him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Maria Theresa. Having entered the diplomatic service under Prince Metternich, Baron de Wacquant-Geozelles negotiated and signed peace treaties on behalf of the Emperor of Austria; for this, he was decorated by Russia and by the German sovereignties.
