Charles émile Jacque (1813–1894), Attributed To. Studies Of Hens (20 × 29 / 44 × 36 Cm)

Artist: Charles émile Jacque
Charcoal and black chalk on paper.
Drawing: 20 × 29 cm
Frame: 44 × 36 cm

This remarkable sheet brings together several studies of chickens executed with great freedom of line and remarkable precision of observation. The drawing conveys the artist’s mastery in rendering volumes, plumage, and postures through sketches made from life.
The work may have been a preparatory piece for the illustrations in Charles Jacque’s book, Le Poulailler. Monographie des poules indigènes et exotiques, published by the Librairie agricole de la Maison Rustique in 1878.
Several studies reproduced in this book bear a very close resemblance to this sheet.

A major painter, draftsman, engraver, and etcher of the Barbizon School, Charles Émile Jacque was one of the greatest specialists in the depiction of domestic animals, particularly poultry and sheep. A friend of Jean-François Millet and close to Théodore Rousseau, he played a key role in the revival of naturalist landscape painting in the 19th century.

His works are now held in numerous public collections, notably at the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, as well as in several French and foreign museums (the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Cleveland Museum of Art, etc.).

The drawing bears an old inscription on the reverse indicating its acquisition at Drouot on November 29, 1973, as well as a note of authentication by Mr. Hellebrauth, 71 rue des Saints-Pères in Paris (see photograph of the reverse).

Please note that the reflections visible in the photographs are caused by the protective glass; the paper is perfectly flat and does not exhibit the ripples that the reflections might suggest.

Beautiful frame made of dark-stained oak.
