Jan Baptist Lambrechts (1680-1731)

An animated kitchen scene with figures and still lifes of vegetables

Oil on panel - early 18th century

Charming genre scene typical of early 18th-century Flemish painting, by Jan Baptist Lambrechts, depicting a rustic interior animated with figures and abundantly stocked with local produce.

In the center of the composition, a seated young woman, dressed in a light apron and broad headdress, presents the viewer with a dish of grapes, in an attitude that is both simple and welcoming. Beside her, an elderly man in a hat appears to be observing her attentively, adding a narrative dimension to the scene.

In the background, two other figures contribute to the liveliness of the domestic interior, treated in a warm half-light characteristic of Flemish kitchen scenes.

The composition is enriched by a remarkable still life of vegetables and fruit, arranged on a table and in the foreground: cabbages, leeks, roots, fruit and foliage are rendered with great pictorial sensitivity and naturalistic attention to detail.

This work is fully in the tradition of Flemish kitchen scenes, brilliantly illustrated byJan Baptist Lambrechts, known for his compositions blending popular figures and abundant foodstuffs.

Here we find:

  • a warm, contrasting palette
  • a marked chiaroscuro
  • a lively treatment of faces and attitudes
  • a pronounced taste for textures (textiles, plants)

Famous for his fine brushwork and remarkably detailed compositions , as well as his rendering of delicate fabrics,,the works of Jan-Baptiste Lambrechts can be found at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, the National Museum in Warsaw, the Museum of Fine Arts in Carcassonne, etc., among others.
