Jean Achard (1807–1884) Farm On The Banks Of The Isère At The Foot Of The Chartreuse Mountains - 28 × 20.5 Cm
Oil on panel.
28 × 20.5 cm.
Signed “Achard ” lower left.
This luminous oil on panel depicts a farmhouse situated on the banks of the Isère River, at the foot of the imposing cliffs of the Chartreuse Mountains, in the Grésivaudan Valley. The artist composes his landscape around a remarkable balance between the dark masses of the trees in the foreground, the radiance of the sun-drenched farmhouse, and the powerful silhouette of the mountains framing the horizon.
Light—the true subject of the painting—brings the cloud-streaked sky to life, makes the foliage shimmer, and is reflected in the calm waters of the Isère. The cool tones of blues and greens blend harmoniously with the ochre hues of the riverbanks and the tiled roofs, capturing with great accuracy the unique atmosphere of the Dauphiné.
This work perfectly illustrates Jean Achard’s attachment to his native region. A major figure in 19th-century landscape painting, he devoted a large part of his work to the sites of Grésivaudan, the Chartreuse, and the Grenoble area, whose shifting light he captured with a sensitivity inherited from the Barbizon School while maintaining a deeply Dauphiné identity. His landscapes of the Grésivaudan region attracted particular attention as early as the 1844 Salon and helped establish his reputation as a great landscape painter.
The ArtistJean Achard (1807–1884) is considered the leading figure of the Dauphiné School of Landscape Painting. Trained in Grenoble before pursuing his career in Paris—where he associated with Corot, Daubigny, and the Barbizon painters, among others—he returned to settle in the Dauphiné region after 1870. His work, largely devoted to Alpine landscapes, is now held in the collections of the Musée de Grenoble, the Musée de Valence, and numerous French public institutions.
