The subject is shown in a half-length pose, turned in a three-quarter profile, his gaze directed toward the viewer. He wears an imposing powdered wig with long curls, a brown velvet jacket with warm sheen, and a rich, finely crafted white lace cravat. The dark, understated background highlights the face and the quality of the fabrics.

The work is attributed to Jean-Baptiste Guélard (1719–c. 1750), a French portrait painter active during the reign of Louis XV. His style is characterized by a highly restrained composition, a pursuit of psychological truth, and a palette of warm tones, prioritizing the subject’s expression over excessive pomp.
