18th Century - Fan Panel Painted With Chinese Motifs - 24.5 X 43 Cm
Gouache on laid paper with gold highlights.
24.5 × 43 cm.
A rare painted fan leaf depicting an elegant garden scene in the Chinoiserie style, an emblematic theme of French decorative arts during the reign of Louis XV.
The composition extends across the entire width of the sheet, following a rhythm perfectly suited to the fan’s future folding. In an imaginary garden, several figures dressed in Oriental attire move among imposing porcelain vases, floral arrangements, a ceremonial canopy, a pond, and delicately stylized vegetation. Two exotic birds enliven the sky, while the scene as a whole evokes that dreamlike Orient that fascinated European artists throughout the 18th century.
The execution reveals a particularly skilled hand. The figures, of great elegance, blend harmoniously into a skillfully balanced composition in which masses of vegetation, architectural elements, and rich decorative motifs alternate. Several details are delicately highlighted with gold—notably certain birds, ornaments, and accessories—creating the shimmering effects intended to be seen when the fan was set in motion.
The laid paper, the delicacy of the gouache, and the use of gilding all indicate that this work was produced for a refined clientele. Whether preserved before assembly or originating from an unfinished sheet, this work offers a particularly valuable insight into the work of the specialized painters who collaborated with the major Parisian fan-making workshops.
Individual fan leaves of this quality are now significantly rarer than complete fans, as many of them were mounted and subsequently worn out through use. Preserving them as individual panels allows one to fully appreciate the quality of the execution and the richness of the composition.
Possible AttributionBased on its format, technique, and iconography, this panel can be linked to the work of Parisian workshops specializing in fan painting during the reign of Louis XV, around 1750–1770.
Its decorative vocabulary is fully in line with the chinoiserie style, popularized by the ornamental compendia of Jean Pillement (1728–1808), whose influence had a profound impact on European decorative arts. Although it cannot be attributed to a specific workshop, this piece elegantly illustrates the refined aesthetic that brought international renown to French fans in the 18th century.
