A charming Flemish-inspired landscape depicting a stone bridge spanning a stream, enlivened at its crest by the solitary silhouette of a horseman.
In the foreground, water flows between large boulders, while a small waterfall on the right adds movement to the composition.The work follows the tradition of Northern European landscape painting, whose 17th- and 18th-century models continued to inspire Flemish painters in the 19th century: large trees serving as a foil, rustic architecture, waterways, and small-scale figures introducing a human presence into a largely dominant natural setting.
The composition is particularly captivating. The dark mass of the large tree on the left echoes the buildings on the right and opens up a vast, luminous vista in the center. The rider, tiny and almost backlit, stands out against the sky at the top of the bridge and serves as the true focal point of the painting. This solitary presence lends the landscape a quiet and slightly romantic atmosphere.The foliage and rocks are rendered with a free hand, while the sky—largely brushed in pearl gray and pale blue tones—brings depth and light to this small-format painting.
On the reverse of the panel, an old label bearing the number 55 remains.
A remarkable Rocaille frame
The work is particularly beautifully highlighted by its large antique frame made of wood and gilded stucco, in the Louis XV/Rocaille style, which is exceptionally decorative.
Heavily molded, it features powerful carved ornaments of shells, volutes, and foliage at the four corners, extended along the sides and center by a lighter rocaille decoration. The alternation between the broad, plain sections of the molding and the richness of the ornamentation gives the frame a great deal of depth without overwhelming the painting.Its generous width, its antique gilding with slightly patinated hues, and the grandeur of its decoration make it a true decorative object in its own right, whose value is significantly greater than that of a simple accompanying frame—which is why we are offering it separately.
